Boards and Bureaus Associated with the Consumer Affairs Office

Consumer Advisory Body

Functions

  • facilitate the development of consumer affairs policies
  • facilitate the development of consumer affairs legislation
  • provide guidance on matters related to analysis and applicable international standards
  • perform such other functions as are relevant to the effective implementation of this Act

Composition

  • no less than seven and no more than eleven members appointed by the Minister
  • the Director of Consumer Affairs
  • the Director of Trade or his or her nominee
  • the Attorney General or his or her nominee
  • a representative of an organisation purporting to provide services for the protection of consumers
  • a representative of the Grenada Chamber of Industry and Commerce
  • the Director of the Grenada Bureau of Standards or his or her nominee
  • a representative of Trade Union Council

Consumer Affairs Tribunal

Functions

  • hear and determine matters referred to it
  • resolve disputes between consumers and suppliers in relation to goods or services
  • dismiss complaints where appropriate

The Tribunal may:

  • issue a summons and enforce the attendance of any party or witness and examine the party or witness on oath
  • order the discovery and production of any document or other object producible as evidence
  • call and examine witnesses
  • requisition the report of the analysis or test from the appropriate laboratory or from any other relevant source
  • require that any document or article submitted to the Office be verified by affidavit
  • make orders

Composition

  • no less than three and no more than seven members appointed by the Governor General
  • persons who are suitably qualified, knowledgeable and experienced in the matters of:
  • consumer affairs
  • law
  • economics
  • business
  • accounting
  • information technology
